“Rock Candy is a series of FUNctional pieces with a playful approach to tableware. These candle holders and candelabras have marbled and spotted textures, pastel rainbow palette, are ornamented with rhinestones, and are good enough to eat. Lighthearted and dreamy, they bring a heightened version of the natural world indoors.
As a parent of a young child, my sense of time, self, and touch have all eroded and re-formed this past year. These pieces reference the way geologic time has the same transformative impact on the landscape, turning a mountain into a chasm. An eroded rock reveals what lies beneath and intricate patterns of sedimentation remain as a visual record of the touch of wind and water, hand and heart. The hardness of the ceramic has the record of my hand permanently imprinted upon it. Undulating and uneven surfaces are caressed lovingly, that softness made permanent.
Life is full of temporal conundrums. This year I’ve experienced nostalgia in real time, and sentimentality for events that haven’t yet occurred. The looping and wandering candelabra forms reference time as it folds back on itself, in a seamless and infinite manner. At the same time, the temporality of a burning candle reminds us to hold onto the sweetness of that fleeting present moment.”
